Cu perdi la strata vecchia, perdi puru iddu – The Invisible Chains of Toxic Relationships
Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to lose themselves. It happens quietly.
Almost invisibly.
A cancelled plan with friends because “it’s easier this way.”
A hobby abandoned because someone doesn’t like it.
Keeping an opinion to yourself just to avoid another argument.
None of these moments seem important on their own.
But over time, they begin to shape a different version of you.
Toxic relationships rarely begin with shouting, insults, or obvious control.
More often, they begin with small compromises that slowly become expectations.
You stop wearing certain clothes.
You stop talking to certain people.
You stop doing the things that once made you feel alive.
Not because you truly want to.
Because it feels easier than dealing with the consequences.
One day, you look back and realize something unsettling.
The person who disappeared wasn’t the one beside you.
It was you.
The old Sicilian proverb says,
“Cu perdi la strata vecchia, perdi puru iddu.”
“Who loses their own path eventually loses themselves.”
Perhaps the proverb isn’t telling us to avoid change.
Life changes all of us.
Healthy relationships change us too.
They help us grow, become kinder, wiser, and stronger.
But there is a difference between growing together and disappearing for someone else.
Love should never require you to abandon the parts of yourself that made someone fall in love with you in the first place.
Perhaps the strongest relationships aren’t the ones where two people become the same.
Perhaps they are the ones where both people remain fully themselves while choosing to walk the same road.
At www.signorcarretto.com, I enjoy exploring everyday experiences that reveal deeper truths about the way we live.
So perhaps the real question isn’t whether someone loves you.
It’s whether you still recognize yourself while loving them.
